Heaven vs the other place. A man was speaking with the Lord one day about heaven and hell. The Lord said, Come and I will show you hell. They entered a room where a group of people sat around a huge pot of stew. Everyone there looked famished, desperate, and starving. Each held a large spoon with a handle so much longer than their own arm that it could not be used to get the stew into their own mouths. Their suffering was horrible. Now come and I will show you heaven, the Lord said. They entered another room, identical to the first in every respect, the pot of stew, the group of people, and the same long-handled spoons. Yet, everyone there was happy and well-nourished. I dont understand, the man said. Why are they so happy here when they were miserable in the other room; everything seems the same? The Lord smiled. Ah, it is simple, he said. Here they all have learned to serve one another. Isnt life for us much the same? There are those right here among us who hunger in many ways; for food, for shelter, for clothing, for love. In this world where abundance abounds, perhaps we too can learn to reach out and serve others. Life is a blessing; please share it with others. Donny (Adapted from Ann Landers)
