Hell Mountain...How appropriate...Once again I eluded danger while out hunting tonight, I scouted an area on the same mountain I had the run in with the sow & her cubs a week ago, then on Saturday almost was bit by a Timber rattlesnake. I came across a very large tree rub, possibly made a day ago, and not to far from that was a fresh ground scrape. I noticed a very well traveled deer trail that was certainly this bucks path. I decided to set up a ground blind from some logs lying around, and in doing so, I laid my backpack and bow on the ground. After a few logs, I noticed yellow jackets engulfed all over my back pack, and then they hit me!! I started scrambling, then started running, I ran nearly 200 yards down the hill I had just came up, minutes before. After all the swatting and nearly 15 stings later to my head, and hand, things settled down enough so that I started back up to gather my things, and move to a different spot along that trail...So I thought!!... As I was walking back, rubbing my head, and hands, that were beginning to sting, I looked out in front of me in the direction of where my hunting gear were and thats when Dejavu kicked in...Out of nowhere come this bear charging at me, I just stopped and froze, noticing her 3 cubs within 10 yards of my gear, she rushed at me to within 50 yards chomping her jaws, and huffing at me. She had stopped and stared at me, still chomping her jaws, and turned to go back up to her cubs, when she did that, I was like a streak of lightning, running back down that hill, never stopping until I got back to my truck, I was about 600 yards up the mountain. All I could think about was, what comes around goes around, and this time, she got me!! I didnt know what to do, I kept thinking that she would tear up my gear, and I would be left with trash. I luckily had a map of the state park, I was hunting, and called the Park service for assistance. They dispatched a warden who came to aid me in getting my items. Rich showed up, without a handgun, and I noticed a fire extinguisher under his seat, I asked him if we should take it, and his response was that it wouldnt hurt. Up the mountain we went, the bear were gone, but, we still had to contend with the bees. We came up with a game plan, and he executed it perfect, by using a long stick to grab my backpack, and move it away from the hive, and then my bow, we never used the fire extinguisher, but, it was a just in case. As we were walking back down and I had told him the encounter, and me running, his comment was pretty funny...It went like this, Put the theme song of Benny Hill in the back ground as you see me running from the bees, and then again when I ran from the bear...Hahahahaaa...Yeah, he ribbed me a bit, and enlightened things. all I could say to him was Thank You! He was just happy to be out and to be apart of my ordeal, but was persistent on getting my belongings. So...There you have it...Im officially done bow hunting Hell Mountain, until gun season, So, if any of you need a hunting partner, please call me...I promise, I wont bring you any bad luck...LOL...Gene.
