Hello Humanists & Friends, Coffee & Conversation is hosted - TopicsExpress

Hello Humanists & Friends, Coffee & Conversation is hosted this week by Mickey, and rather than sending out a long list of articles I have made it really convenient for those who are interested to check them out at our website sdhumanist.org. Please go to sdhumanist.org/coffee-conversation/ and that will show you what we are talking about this week, and i will keep the previous two weeks up from now following this week to read what we discussed. But we do have a lot to talk about this week. There was a recent study discussing the unpopularity of Atheism, especially having Atheist in-laws. the UK banned teaching creationism as science in Great Britain. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints excommunicated a women’s rights activist. The Supreme Court released a series of highly crucial rulings this week including digital data on cellphones being protected by the Fourth Amendment. Congress apologized for Jim Crow and Slavery, Utah got marriage equality. The President stepped up and is increasing employment protection for LGBTQ people-as well as become a proponent for saving the bees. This and much more. The articles are on sdhumanist.org/coffee-conversation/. Some upcoming meetings and projects: There is a July movie-screening on the role of the cattle industry and climate change (Cowspiracy). One reminder, this is not an HASD event, we aren’t selling tickets ourselves. You must reserve your tickets (and a link is provided on the meetup link for this). Planning is starting for our February conference. The venue itself costs $2,000, there are additional expenses. We broke even at the last one thanks to your donations and attendance. We want to have another huge event at the start of 2015. We need your help. Please consider making a donation to make this happen. These events are amazing, they show the strength of our community, and allow us to bring you all something really special. The deposit for the hotel costs $500. We would like to lock it in now, so please consider making a donation of $20, $50, or even $100. The topic for this coming year is coming together-we will have a planning meeting for this coming up in July. Also for July, we are going to be having two wonderful meetings that promise to be enlightening, enriching, and a hell of a lot of fun. We are looking at Humanism at the founding of the Country and the question of “Was America founded as a religious nation?” Initially we know that the answer is no—but in truth the reality is a bit more complicated and nuanced. There are multiple other questions that arise from this situation including, whether it was or not, what does that matter to where we are today? We are also doing a dual-book day for our book club. This is going to be David Sehat’s The Myth of American Religious Freedom as well as Thomas Paine’s The Age of Reason. Lastly, there are some great webinars that are happening (and I am teaching one in August). Go to secularactivism.org for more information on them. Have a great weekend and enjoy Coffee & Conversation. -Jason
