While our community has made great strides towards reducing homelessness, it remains a critical issue, said Nicole Angresano, vice president for community impact at United Way of Greater Milwaukee. This year, rather than respond to an emergency need on a cold night, we worked with our wonderful partner, the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, to fund proactively, in order to provide the Guest House of Milwaukee and Cathedral Center with the support they need to provide overflow throughout the season. On any given night in Milwaukee, there are about 1,500 people who do not have a place to call home, and Milwaukee has only 800 shelter beds available to serve our homeless population, Angresano said. No one in our community should be without a basic human need like shelter, added Janel Hines, director of grant programs at the Greater Milwaukee Foundation. Shelters offer safety, security and dignity to some of our most vulnerable residents, and through partnership, we are extending this opportunity to even more individuals in need of shelter. A $15,000 grant from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation will enable the Guest House of Milwaukee to offer 15 -20 additional shelter beds to homeless men, boosting the normal daily capacity of 86 to more than 100. A $15,000 grant from United Way will enable Cathedral Center to offer 10 additional beds per night to homeless women throughout the winter months, bring its nightly capacity to 42. The winter weather is fast approaching, and an increased number of homeless men will be seeking refuge from the elements, said Cindy Krahenbuhl, executive director of the Guest House of Milwaukee. With the generous funding from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, we are proud to know that we will be able to keep over 100 men from sleeping outside throughout the harsh Wisconsin winter every single night. This is something we can all feel good about! Thanks to United Way, the Cathedral Center will be able to expand emergency shelter space for unaccompanied women during the coldest months of the year, said Donna Rongholt-Migan, executive director for The Cathedral Center. Our annual overflow shelter enables us to continue to serve, even when our regular shelter is full. ### About United Way of Greater Milwaukee: United Way of Greater Milwaukee improves our community by mobilizing people and resources to drive strategic impact in Education, Income and Health - the building blocks for a good quality of life.
