Happy feast day to all children of the Blessed Virgin Mary, especially all who recite Her Holy Rosary with true devotion Happy feast day to all Catholic Missionaries Today June 26th marks the liturgical memorial of Saint Josemaría Escrivá. He was born on the 9th of January, 1902 in Barbastro, Aragon, Spain. Catholic History tells us that Saint Josemaría had 5 siblings • Carmen (born 1899 – died 1957) , • Santiago (born 1919 – died 1994), • Plus 3 younger sisters who died when they were small children. His parents, Jose and Dolores, gave their children a deep Christian education. Saint Josemaría Escrivá as a teenager in Logrono for the first time sensed his vocation to the Catholic Priesthood. He was moved by the sight of footprints left in the snow by a barefoot friar. He sensed that God was asking something of him, though he did not know exactly what it was. He thought becoming a priest would help him discover and fulfill this calling from God as so began to prepare for priesthood, first in Logrono and later in Saragossa, Spain. He was ordained to the Catholic priesthood on the 28th of March 1925, in Saragossa. During a spiritual retreat on the 2nd of October, 1928, he saw what it was that God was asking of him. Catholic Tradition tells us that by Divine inspiration Saint Josemaría Escrivá founded Opus Dei Opus Dei is Latin for Work of God Opus Dei is a way of sanctification in daily work and in the fulfillment of the Christians ordinary duties. Saint Josemaría Escrivá through OPUS DEI opened a new path of holiness in the Catholic Church Father Josemaría preached that men and women can become Holy by performing their work and daily duties with a Christian spirit. ‘Opus Dei’ was given final papal approval in 1950 by Venerable Pope Pius XII (who was the 260th Bishop of Rome and Head of the Catholic Church since the pontificate of Saint Peter the Apostle) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Catholic Daily Norms of members of Opus Dei • Heroic minute, waking up punctually and saying Serviam! (Latin: I will serve) • Morning offering, fixing ones intentions to do everything for the glory of God • Spiritual reading and reading the New Testament, a practice recommended by Saint Paul and other saints • Mental prayer, conversation with God • Holy Mass, Holy Communion and Thanksgiving after Communion • Holy Rosary, a traditional Catholic Devotion • The Preces (the common prayer of Opus Dei) • Angelus prayer which recalls Christian belief in Gods becoming man, said at noon every day • Memorare prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary offered for the Opus Dei member in most need at that exact moment • Visit to the Blessed Sacrament, a Catholic practice of greeting Jesus in the Holy Eucharist • Examination of conscience at the end of the day: • Three Hail Mary… before bed to pray for the virtue of purity • Short, spontaneous prayers throughout the day, offering up to God ones work, sufferings etc. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Catholic Weekly Norms of members of Opus Dei • Confession, in pursuit of the Catholic recommendation on frequent confession • a group meeting of spiritual formation (the Circle) • the praying of a Marian antiphon on Saturdays • taking Psalm 2 as the basis of mental prayer on Tuesdays ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Additionally, members should participate yearly in a spiritual retreat; a three-week seminar every year is obligatory for numeraries, and a one-week seminar for supernumeraries. Also members are expected to make a day-trip pilgrimage where they recite three 5-decades of the Holy Rosary on the month of May in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Father Josemaría Escrivá died unexpectedly on the 26th of June, 1975 (aged 73) in Rome in the room where he worked, after a last affectionate glance at a picture of Our Lady. He was beatified and given the decree of heroic virtues and declared as Blessed Josemaría Escrivá on the 17th of May 1992, in the Vatican City, Rome by Pope Blessed John Paul II (who was the 264th Vicar of Christ since the pontificate of Saint Peter the Apostle) Blessed Josemaría was canonized and pronounced as Saint Josemaría Escrivá by His Holiness Pope Saint John Paul II in (the Vatican City) Rome on October 6, 2002. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The body of Saint Josemaría Escrivá rests in the Prelatic Church of Our Lady of Peace, Viale Bruno Buozzi 75, Rome, Italy. He is venerated in the Roman Catholic Church Saint Josemaría Escrivá was referred to by His Holiness Pope John Paul II as ’’ the Saint of Ordinary Life’’ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Prayer to Saint Josemaría Escrivá O God, through the mediation of Mary our Mother, you granted your priest Saint Josemaría countless graces, choosing him as a most faithful instrument to found Opus Dei, a way of sanctification in daily work and in the fulfillment of the Christians ordinary duties.
