Hello everyone: It’s been awhile since we’ve been able to - TopicsExpress

Hello everyone: It’s been awhile since we’ve been able to contact you via email. That’s mostly due to the fact that Granny’s Closet has just exploded with donations and then the community being so hugely supportive of our little shop … browsing almost any day any of us happens to be there and certainly on our days we’re open for business. This is good for the GVSC and the community, but leaves Ruth Richter, chair of the GVSC Board, little time to tend to the business of the Senior Center. In that vein, let’s welcome Robbie Wilson who has agreed to come in and work a few hours each week in the office. Her time and expertise are much appreciated. Also, a big thanks to Judy Brinken who has volunteered to come and clean the Center for us on an “as needed” basis. In addition, several additional people, Merrily Mosman, Hope Wilson, Anita Sherwood, are now helping on Granny’s Monday workdays. These three ladies have been kind of wide-eyed as they see the amount of work that goes into keeping Granny’s the great little shop that it is! Thanks to all of these ladies for being willing to give of their time to the benefit of the Garden Valley Senior Center! A big thanks as well to C.J, Carol, Scharf, GV Board member, who headed up the Christmas bazaar last Saturday. The bazaar and the sale of yummy bowls of soup made a tidy little sum to add to the coffers of the GVSC bank account, and a good time was had by all participants and customers. Thanks as well to Roscoe Harrold for the loan of his big trailer to store the furnishings of the Center as well as Tod Neumann, Ron Richter, and Tom Taylor for helping to clear out the Center and then to Greg Rolof and his son Billy for hauling all that stuff back into the Center for us. There’s been some confusion lately about the happenings at the Center and I apologize for that. Sometimes we just get our wires crossed, sometimes folks who say they’re coming on one date change their minds in midstream and decide to come on a different date, and sometimes “stuff just happens.” Your best source of information about whatever might be happening at the Senior Center is either to watch the sign out by the road which always reflects the next event or stop at the Center, read the calendar on the front door that shows the whole month’s events. The newspaper, The Idaho World, has the information of upcoming events and happenings and, by the way, thanks to Allan Scharf for writing the weekly article for us. I presume the Facebook page has current information on it. And the radio station in Crouch, 97.5, updates the community all the time about what’s going on at the Center. If you still don’t know what’s happening, call the Center, 462-3943, leave a message, and I’ll get back to you ASAP! Awhile back in the mail was a flyer from a place called Homestyle Direct, 1-866-735-0921, located in Twin Falls. The flyer had a listing of lots and lots of meals they prepare and send out to their clients for the price of $5.95 per meal. I was curious about whether this might be something our membership or community would be interested in, called them and chatted with a lovely lady, told her I’d recommend the product but not until I knew it was worthy. She told me she’d send out some sample meals to try, and she sent out a Styrofoam box in dry ice with eight meals in it! I tried them all, liked some a lot, and found others to be rather mediocre. The list of possibilities is very lengthy and it would be easy enough to pick out things that appeal to you, try them, and reorder them as needed. There are flyers at the Center that are available if anyone would like to pursue this meal option. This organization here in Idaho sends out 25,000 home-cooked meals every week so it’s no fly-by-night business, and it seems to me that it’s a good option for those who live alone, can’t or don’t want to cook, the size of the meal is a perfect portion in a quantity that we should be eating, and the meals are tasty. You can also go online and check it out further: homestyledirect. Call me for further information! This Friday, November 8th, 6:30 p.m., there is NOT a dinner as had been “advertised,” but there is Bingo with light snacks provided. Those folks who show up have a good time and it’s a fun little outing for an hour or so! The more the merrier! A presentation by the Boise County Emergency Services will be given from 7:00-9:00 p.m., Thursday, November 14th, at the Garden Valley Senior Center. Check out the flyers that have been posted around town and at the Senior Center. This is an event that none of us, senior citizens as well as everyone else, will want to miss. It’s a great opportunity to hear a variety of presentations about how to be prepared for any kind of an emergency and, if you watch the news these days, it seems anything can happen anywhere! On Tuesday, November 19th, 6:00 p.m., the LDS Church is hosting the dinner at the Senior Center. From what I’ve heard about the menu, it’s a dinner you won’t want to miss. I believe I’ve heard of the possibility of some entertainment as well. Yoga class will meet at the Center for two more Friday mornings, November 8 and 15. Shanti Das who instructs the class lives in Lowman and is discontinuing over the winter months. They’re a great group and we’ve enjoyed having them here. The Garden Valley Quilters only meet once in November on the 13th, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. We love having these ladies share our facility, lots of chatter, great work to enjoy looking at, and they clean up after themselves! The Fit and Fallproof classes continue every Tuesday and Thursday at 3:00 p.m. Watching these ladies exercise, I have to wonder why the rest of us don’t have the good sense to join them. It’s healthy, safe exercise that anyone can do and can be modified to whatever each person’s specific needs are. I’m guessing none of us is so fit that we couldn’t benefit from joining this group of fun ladies (some men attending would be great!) who then have a nice social time afterwards. The Foot Clinic has been changed to Friday, December 13th, 10:30 a.m. Call the Center, 462-3943, and leave a message if you’d like to be signed up. We currently need more folks involved if it is to happen. So, folks, thanks to all those people who continue to support the Senior Center. It’s not the same as it had been when we were still getting government funds, but it’s an active, happening place and well worth continuing to be involved with and supportive of. We especially thank the community at large who have been very supportive of us! Ruth Richter, GVSC Chair of the Board Thank you, Garden Valley Senior Center Phone: (208) 462-3943 Fax: (856) 441-8455
