Deborah Boscarelli JE SUIS CHARLIE What is the worst cartoon? The caricature drawn on paper of Muhammad and the bloodthirsty caliph al-Baghdadi, or the true image, which has been around the world, in which two people praise to Allah shooting the final blow to an already wounded policeman on the ground, after which the tragedy becomes a massacre in a newspaper? The ruthless terrorist attack made in Paris against the weekly Charlie Hebdo, whatever its matrix, Muslim extremism or Jihad or Radical Islam, cannot but arouse the greatest horror, maximum compassion and concern for human lives cut short. Freedom of expression, the one sanctioned by Article 21 of our Constitution - Everyone has the right to freely express their thoughts in speech, writing or any other means of communication. The press can not be subjected to any outside authority or censorship. That does not mean license to offend, but that freedom remains one of the greatest achievements and fundamental bulwarks of our Christian civilization. Today Charlie Hebdo, tomorrow perhaps some larger mass media. Is it September 11 in Europe? Islamic terrorism has already hit the Old Continent, from Madrid to London. But this time the wound seems deeper. For this the flag of democratic societies must not furl in mourning, but waving high, for the director of Charlie Hebdo and its cartoonist’s discomforting irreverence. Someone said Recognizing the value of freedom should not create the illusion of its eternal life.” We expect, we need a greater Europe where everyone can discuss, criticize, demand respect, but having the common unshakeable belief in the values of coexistence, which today have been so brutally raped in Paris. The real suicide, of both himself and that of civilization, belongs to those who only believe in hatred for the other. Who sees no other way to assert their own vision of the world than to destroy everything that is not under their control. The Christian West has the wisdom and strength to counter all this. However, to do so will demand that those values which we sometimes forget or leave timidly and guiltily in the background of our glittering façade? Those precious foundations must be brought to the foreground of our consciousness. D.B
