Helping our future Doctors gain awareness for the Impact of Concussion on Vision. This was the guiding purpose for Dr. Fortenacher’s annual lecture at Michigan’s College of Optometry (MCO) at Ferris State University on Friday, July 25, 2014. Teaming with Dr. Fortenbacher at this presentation was our current resident, Dr. Aubrey Breithaupt. Together they provided a 2 hour lecture that included an expanded overview of the various functions of the visual brain, current research and successful models for optometric vision rehabilitation. In this short video watch Dr. Fortenbacher along with help of an MCO student from the audience, show the impact of spatial prisms on the ambient visual pathway and linkage to motor behavior and the lingering response of the prism with only a couple minutes of wear. This demonstration shows how spatial prisms, when propery used in office-based vision rehabilitation, can have a useful application for those who struggle with spatial confusion, visual neglect and other visual-motor complications associated with post concussion vision syndrome to regain function. Many thanks to the MCO professors, Dr. Sarah Hinkley, Dr. Paula McDowell and all the excellent faculty at MCO for their guidance and leadership , setting the stage for our future Doctors of Optometry to have the curriculum for advanced training in vision development and rehabilitation.
