Here are some duties of a minimum compliment of 4 men on a firetruck! Please decide which ones are not necessary! 3)Firefighter/Hydrant Man (also medically trained for the ambulance) Rides in one of the 2 air pack seats behind the Driver or Officer. Dons full turnout gear while ridding to the fire scene. Takes orders and information from the officer. (does not don an air pack yet) Makes mental notes of what he sees wile approaching the Fire Scene. When the Firetruck stops at the hydrant he jumps off the truck and grabs a Water Feed Hose from the rear of the truck & he grabs a hydrant tool kit too. He first wraps the Water Feed line around the hydrant and signals the driver to proceed to the fire. (As the Firetruck moves toward the fire ground, the feed hose line unravels from the rear of the Firetruck and lays on the street). While the Firetruck is moving away from the Fire Hydrant, The Firefighter/Hydrant Man quickly uses his Hydrant tool to remove one of the Hydrant Bib Covers & places a Hydrant Wrench onto the Hydrant Valve at the top of the Hydrant. After the Firetruck has been strategically positioned by the Driver, the Hydrant Man then unwraps the Feed Water Hose Line from the Hydrant & screws the Hose End onto the hydrant Bib then tightens it with a Hydrant Wrench. He then must Stand By and wait for the Firetruck Driver to connect the other end of the feed line to the proper input valve on the side of the Firetruck. After the Driver has finished connecting the Hose Feed Line he opens the input valve of that Bib on the truck. The hydrant Man then is signaled by the Driver to Open the Hydrant Water Output Valve witch Charges the Feed Hose Line with Water Pressure & Volume. the Firefighter/Hydrant Man must then run up to Fire Scene, climb back into his air pack seat and don an air pack. He reports to the Fire Company Officer. At this point he may be ordered into the fire to preform Search & Rescue for a reported person who may be trapped in the fire or Back Up the other Initial Attack Firefighter from the other air pack seat. He may be ordered to do any of the following: Grab a Ladder, Get onto an Arial Ladder or bucket atop of the Firetruck then raise & position it as well as Aim & Fire the Water Gun at the top of the ladder or in the bucket at a hard to reach spot of the Burning Structure. He may be ordered to Ventilate the structure by placing power fans at out side doorways, breaking windows , climbing a ladder & Using an Axe to chop holes in the structure roof. He may be told to get an Attic Ladder to climb into the attic to look for & extinguish fire. He may be ordered to notify the Driver & then, grab a Hose Line off the Firetruck to spray an adjacent structure that is in danger of igniting from the heat of the Initial Structure fire. He may be called upon to administer Triage (identifying the most critical persons 1st) & Emergency Medical Treatment to a Victim(s). He may be ordered to respond with the Ambulance to a Heart Attack or other Emergency taking place elsewhere in the city. After all people are safe & the fire has for the most part been Extinguished, he will assist in Salvage of the Structure, Clean up of the Fire Scene. Securing & Protecting Property, Vacuuming & Squeegeeing up Excess Water, Placing Tarps and Boarding Up Windows, Doors, & Openings, as well as loading up Fire Gear used at the fire to be cleaned & replaced onto the Firetruck. He will Refill Air Pack Tanks either, at the Fire Ground or back at the Fire Station. He may be ordered to remain at the Fire Scene with a Water line either, hooked to a Firetruck or directly to a Fire hydrant as well as other tools to assist him in watching for a rekindling of the fire for the remainder of his shift or until he can be relieved by one of his fellow Shift members or the Next Shift. There are many additional duties of a Firefighter/Hydrant Man not mentioned here! Can the city afford to be without a Firefighter/Hydrant Man??? My next posting will discuss the the 1 remaining Fire Fighters & their Duties recommended by, The National Fire Protection Association (N F P A) 1710 Standard!
