Here at Smoky we have traditions for a reason! Tradition ties us all upward into our family trees, and down into the families that are still being created. Its a way of honoring our past players and departed collegiate bound athletes, and of welcoming new members in. Family traditions are physical representations of our place in a never-ending story that includes everyone weve ever played with, trained with and respected fully on the field. Observing and preserving tradition, and teaching it to each new athletes that steps foot on our fields, grounds us all in an ongoing project that will last far beyond our own short time here at SHHS. One of our traditions here at SHHS, is running the mile in a specified time of 6:30 for JV and 6:00 for varsity. The mile in itself and the test in itself is not a physical fitness test, it is a mental, traditional test to prove that each and every player can mentally work through a moment of intense fatigue and fight for a common goal. Young athletes tend to struggle and often dont pass it for 5,6,7 even 10 times, but when they do its a life changing event. They now know they can work harder and push themselves to new levels. we take pride in this test and when people who are struggling pass it, we commemorate it. we dont care how you get it done, just that you get around that darn track in 6:30!!! Here is a video of our one of our young freshmen going out of his way to pass the mile in 6:30 for the first time in his life after multiple attempts to pass it! I wish we could see his celebration at the end, regardless we are still proud of him as he actions symbolize what weve created. Tradition. https://youtube/watch?v=QK95lqM9D7w&feature=em-share_video_user
