Here is a letter Melinda wrote about the ingredients in a certain dog food - so many pet owners arent aware of where some of these ingredients come from and how harmful they can be! We thought it would be good information to share! I know you want the absolute best for your dog so I thought I should warn you about the Cesar food he eats. There are two different dog food advisory sites that are both wonderful. dogfoodanalysis and dogfoodadvisor Both of these sites list ingredients for most dog foods, explain their sources, and rate the food based on certain criteria. Here is the link to Cesar Filet Mignon Flavor review from one of the sites: dogfoodadvisor/dog-food-reviews/cesar-dog-food/ The most significant issue I find with Cesar food is that it uses “meat by-products”. When the animal is not specified (ie: chicken, beef, etc) and it says “meat” it means it is a waste product that can contain euthanized animals, road kill, diseased animals from slaughterhouses that are not fit for human consumption, etc. In fact, dog tag pieces as well as flea collar pieces have been found in “meat by-product”. I don’t want to scare you, but want you to be well informed. Cesar food also uses “Sodium Nitrite” as a preservative. This is a very controversial ingredient as nitrosamines are a well known cancer inducer. Why do companies make dog food with these kinds of ingredients? Because it is cheap for them and most consumers have no idea what these ingredients mean or where they come from. Plus the print on the containers is so small, they are hoping consumers won’t notice. So what do you do? Well, if you can find a dog food in a mass chain store or grocer (such as Walmart), then it means the food is being mass produced in such high quantity, that the producer is using the most widely available and cheap ingredients. The less you pay, usually the cheaper the quality. There are so many more canned foods though, that are better quality. The two reference sites I gave you above are a good place to start as you can search by the stars or ratings. If you can only afford a 4 star food, then just search through all the 4 star brands. Cesar food is a 2 star food. I carry Orijen and Weruva here which are the highest rated 6 star foods. But I’m not telling you all of this to get you to buy the food I carry. I just hate to see your dog eating such a terrible food and he would be so much better off with even a 4 or 5 star rated food. If you research some brands of food that you would like to specifically try, just let me know and I can see if our distributor (Bark to Basics) can get it for us. We can always add a special order to our regular order. We order every 2 weeks. Otherwise, Petsmart carries some foods that are not carried at grocers. They are also a huge chain, but at least it narrows the margin down from the massive producers that are stocking millions of grocery stores around the country. I have no idea what the brand of dry food is that your dog is eating since it is not in the original bag, but if you need any help with that one and its ingredient list/sources, I will be happy to help!
