Here is a very important meeting that anyone living in Lucerne Valley should consider attending: PUBLIC DRECP MEETING ON FRIDAY, SEPT. 6 The community is invited to attend a public meeting on the Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan and how it will affect Lucerne Valley at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6. The meeting will be held at the Lucerne Valley Elementary School and is expected to last up to three hours. Federal, state and county representatives are expected to be in attendance and listen to community members’ concerns and suggestions. One of the primary purposes of the DRECP is to determine appropriate locations for utility-scale renewal energy projects in the California Desert while being mindful of desert ecosystem protection and conservation. But some area residents and community leaders have expressed concern that the plan’s “development focus areas” violate pre-existing community plans and the heavily subsidized renewables will displace viable projects. “Lucerne Valley is ground zero for this type of thing, and that’s scary to some people,” said Richard Selby, chair of the newly formed Lucerne Valley-Johnson Valley Municipal Advisory Council. A letter tailored for the successful 1,000 Letters Campaign proposed that rooftop and parking lot photovoltaic solar is a better solution than the state foisting large-scale projects in Lucerne Valley and other targeted areas. “Photovoltaic-covered parking lots in Palm Springs and Las Vegas alone could generate megawatts better and cheaper than in our communities, closer to the areas of demand and with existing infrastructure,” the letter stated. Another DRECP meeting will be held in Yucca Valley on Saturday, Sept. 7. For more information on the DRECP, visit drecp.org or cadesertco.org/DRECP.
