Here is an email I received today from the excellent Dawn Phillips of the amazing group - Causa Justa::Just Causa ********************************************************************************** Please join Causa Justa :: Just Cause and our allies at the Keep our Families and our Communities Together rally next Tuesday, October 21st at 5:30pm. Our rally is about bringing attention to the fact that displacement happens on a local to a international level and to unite those of us who are pushed out of our neighborhoods with the many who have been forced out of their home countries. As an organization that builds unity between Black and Latin@ communities in the Bay Area, its critical for us to make this connection and to build our collective power to stop this displacement, at every level. This rally is apart of our continuing #TenantsRightsTuesdays in support of the Tenant Protection Ordinance, which goes to council next Tuesday, October 21st for its first reading. We are inviting you to join us for the rally and stay to speak up and show your support for Tenants Rights at the City Council meeting that evening. The Council agenda has a lot of good items including the approval of monies for unaccompanied minors and the first reading of an ordinance in support of urban agriculture. Check out this nice write up that the folks at Oakland North did about Tuesdays committee meeting. It gives a good synopsis on where we are in the process. You can also read this letter that CJJC sent to the council today, naming our position and urging them to pass the rest of the ordinance without anymore compromises or edits (also attached as a pdf). For more background on the issues of tenant harassment, check out this piece done by KTVU specifically on how harassment is targeting low income tenants in Oakland and visit our tumblr to see stories from a few of our members. ktvu/videos/news/2-investigates-questionable-tactics-by-landlords/vCxMzM/ In addition to coming out to our rally and to the City Council hearing next week, we need you to keep the pressure on! Please continue to call your council member and send in letters of support for the ordinance. The council members names, emails and phone numbers are below and a sample letter is attached that you can use. ____ Dan Kalb (Champion - District 1) dkalb@oaklandnet (510) 238-7001 - Kalb has been supportive, but made a compromise on the ordinance that we are not comfortable with. Keep the pressure on him, let him know that his leadership is critical to making sure that Oakland tenants are protected at this time and that we appreciate his work thus far. Pat Kernighan (District 2) pkernighan@oaklandnet ( 510) 238-7002 - Kernighan voted No on the ordinance, even after it was edited. Shes been unclear on her reasons for being against the ordinance. Force her to give us an answer on why shes against tenant protections, and dont let her try to sell you on the fact that we need a new method of code enforcement. We do, but that won;t address the crisis that we are in now! Lynette McElhaney (District 3) lmcelhaney@oaklandnet (510) 238-7003 - McElhaney answered the call to come harder with her leadership to move this ordinance and was the leading yes vote at this past Tuesdays committee meeting. Let her know that we appreciate it, and need her leadership to continue - Its critical that we dont see any further compromises being made to pass this ordinance. We need it all, NOW! Libby Schaaf (District 4) lschaaf@oaklandnet (510) 238-7004 - Schaaf was our other yes vote in the committee this past Tuesday, and really took a stand for the plight of immigrant tenants. Let her know that her leadership is appreciated and that we need her to keep it up to drown out the influence of the 2 council members who have stated opposition to the ordinance. Noel Gallo (District 5) ngallo@oaklandnet (510) 238-7005 - Gallo has been friendly thus far, and were confident that we will get his support. Let him know that people in his district care about this issue and want to see him support this piece of legislation. Desley Brooks (District 6) dbrooks@oaklandnet (510) 238-7006 - Brooks is also friendly to tenants rights, and we believe that we have her support. She needs to hear that this is something happening in district 6 and she needs to hear from organizations she knows and individuals in her district who want to see her take leadership on this issue. Most of the complaints of harassment and habitability issues that we see in our clinic come from deep east Oakland and Brooks is the only council member in the deep east who has expressed some concern for tenants. Larry Reid (District 7) lreid@oaklandnet (510) 238-7007 - Reid is not at all supportive. This past Tuesday, he rushed in after the vote had already been taken to try to open the vote back up so that he could register his No vote to kill the ordiance in community. He needs to hear from people in his district and organizations that he knows that they want to see him support tenants rights. EVERYONE CAN CALL - Rebecca Kaplan (At-large) atlarge@oaklandnet (510) 238-7008 - Kaplan is another tenant friendly council member. Kaplan needs to hear from Oakland residents and organizations that they want to see this happen for tenants in the city of Oakland and that it needs to happen NOW! _____ Looking forward to next Tuesday, please contact Robbie Clark at [email protected], or call Alma Blackwell at (510) 763-5877 ext 318 if you have any questions! -- Dawn Phillips Causa Justa :: Just Cause [email protected] Follow CJJC on Twitter - @causajusta1 WEST OAKLAND OFFICE: 3268 San Pablo Avenue, Oakland, California 94608 EAST OAKLAND OFFICE: 9124 International Blvd, Oakland, California 94603 SAN FRANCISCO OFFICE: 2301 Mission Street, Suite 201, San Francisco, California 94110
