Though the Eastern front, under Generals Lee, Jackson, and Longstreet, were victorious in Virginia, the Western front was in serious trouble. The last Confederate strongholds along the Mississippi river, Vicksburg, and Port Hudson, are all that remain. By July, 1863 Vicksburg has been under siege from General Grant. If the Union controls the Mississippi River, they will simply move East and the Southern States will be surrounded. Gettysburg was a desperate move to end the war. General Lee attacks the North hoping to destroy the Army of the Potomac, and threaten Washington. July 1863 was a very bad month for the South.
