Here is an old and well written article by our own Rosemary. If we are devoted to the use of facts and scientific study, medical research, and general accuracy of the elements that are included in our positions, then we should not toss these out the window in a specially pleaded case for using unqualified, armchair psychology when referring to problems related to religion, religious beliefs, and those who hold those beliefs. I consider such to be hypocritical, where we want evidence of their claims, we want attention to education and factual accuracy, yet we violate our own wants and expectations to call religious belief a delusion or generically state that religious beliefs are mental disorders. Considering qualified persons and psychological research do not support this conclusion, said conclusion is no less delusional by its own definition of what constitutes the diagnosis of delusion, an irony that simply will not do, for any of us. I also think it important to note how useless a process this is. It eliminates theists who may share all of our concerns about religion, it vilifies the many people who are themselves victims of religion, and it certainly fails to allow for meaningful dialogue where one can be taken seriously regarding their concerns to those who may consider atheism but are not yet compelled, or to those who do not consider it but wish to give us fair time to voice our positions and concerns. Here is a tip. If one is not a qualified clinician and is not talking about a single religious person where other factors that would contribute to an accurate diagnosis of psychological dysfunction are demonstrably present, then one should be holding ones tongue. - Thomas
