Here is the opinion of a 15 year veteran cop. There is much that has been in the news about the police and use of force. The President said that there needs to be a better cooperation between the police departments and the communities that they serve. Well, 15 years ago when I started my career as a police officer, there was a big push for “community policing”. The police departments are still trying to do it, so far as their budgets will allow. I have personally been involved in a Citizen Police Academy, bicycle rodeos, shop with a cop, Gang Resistance Education And Training, School Resource Officer, and Citizen Ride-alongs. I have also had fellow officers volunteer with me to raise funds for Domestic Violence Shelters, Christmas presents for kids, and Special Olympics. There are many ways that police departments reach out to communities. A lot of departments still have citizen police academies. If yours doesn’t, all departments that I have ever heard of allow citizen ride-alongs. A “ride-along” is when you get into a squad car with a police officer and get to see and experience what the officer does during the performance of his/her duties. (You’ll have to pass a background check and sign a lengthy waiver.) If you want to know why the police do what they do, ask them. Go and see for yourself. You won’t regret the experience, and you certainly will not forget it.
