Brian Elliot - Review of Mamas New Bag Debut Cd The debut CD is a worthy addition to the large body of work currently available from Australian bands. “Mamas New Bag” is an R & B/Blues band based on the Gold Coast but with a list of contributing musicians who have worked with some of Australia’s best R & B bands eg Rose Tattoo, Black Feather, Moving Pictures and Renee Geyer band. This CD is a welcome departure from the all too common guitar driven band. The sensitive use of saxophone, Blues harp and slide guitar gives the CD an edge over the all too familiar interminable guitar solos that occupy so much of the new CD’s being produced. The songs on the CD cover a range of genres and a wide range of composers including the band singer Andrea Szabo. Her “Hard Headed Woman” is well written and is well produced by bass player and producer – Geordie Leach. The Ernestine Anderson composition “Wrong Number” showcases Andrea’s voice to perfection. Other band members fit perfectly into the T-Bone Walker composition – T-Bone Shuffle. Overall a very promising debut CD and their CD launch on July 13 is a great opportunity to see this entertaining band - Mamas New Bag - live.
