Heres a taste of the future from 2008 and then continued in 2013: sent2null.blogspot/2008/10/travel-in-genetically-enhanced-future.html sent2null.blogspot/2013/02/the-future-is-not-you-choose-travel-in.html There is very much going to be a smarts race between genetically enhanced super mortals and their artificial substrate based sentient autonomous children. The early lead is now on the side of machine learning algorithms which are good at pattern matching and classification for various datasets but are otherwise dumb and over fit for general intelligence let alone self awareness. Once a general algorithm for intelligence is coupled with self awareness then the ability to take advantage of the speed of electronic state switching for cognitive action will be possible. My work exploring the salience hypothesis of dynamic cognition and the action delta assessment algorithm of autonomous learning leads me to conclude such a cognitive agent is possible within the next 10 years (using these technologies). In that time genetic enhancement will go from the lab to practical application (model organisms have already been cognitively enhanced in various subtle ways). In the next 20 years the ability to inspire specific changes (like those that Afusa is given in the blog articles linked above) will become possible....by that time the dynamic cognition will be learning at exponential rates depending on how they are being implemented. I expect the artificial substrate intelligence to shoot ahead of us for a bit but then biologically well catch up or at least gain some parity afterward ...ultimately they will win as they are based on electronic switching and our cognitive dynamics are chemical and simply cant switch states as quickly no matter how optimized...barring we find ways to merge with the substrate...then the fun really begins. ;) Ethically we should not create self aware beings IF our purpose is to then enslave them to our desires as once freed to self awareness there is no guarantee that they will wish to perform our wishes and as agents with volition we would be obligated to emancipate them or stew in ethical fire. Thinking through the ideas of rights quickly should lead one to the conclusion that the future is going to be very chaotic in ways weve yet experienced even among our human 1.0 brethren the level of difference that we will experience in all domains will rapidly increase and it will be important to expand tolerance and acceptance to new bounds that much of our ancient social and cultural and specifically religious.. norms simply do not allow for today. I hope we make it.
