Heres our Press Release, approved by Incident Commander Nathan Rabe: Monument Road Fire Update Walla Walla, Washington – John Boose, Operations Section Chief for the Southeast Washington Interagency Incident Management Team on scene at the Monument Road Fire reports this morning that crews worked overnight to patrol and mop up the fire. They are continuing patrol and mop up this morning and are hoping to release control back to Walla Walla County Fire District #1 before noon. The fire is primarily in Walla Walla County Fire District #1 jurisdiction. Boose stated that some abandoned structures were lost to the fire, but that the property owner indicated that the structures were of no value. A cell tower was not destroyed, as previously reported, however the fire did burn around a radio repeater tower. The repeater tower was not damaged. Scott Peters, Member Services Coordinator with Columbia Rural Electric Association reported that nine (9) power poles were destroyed by the fire resulting in nine household and/or pump outages. Crews have been working through the night to restore service. Scott Peters can be reached at 509.526.4041. The Monument Road fire started Wednesday, September 3, 2014, at around 5:30 AM near Lower Monumental Road and Wooden Road. The fire quickly grew from an initial report of 5,000 acres to its present estimated size of 20,500 due to high winds, which pushed the fire northeast towards Ayer Road. Nathan Rabe with the Southeast Washington Interagency Incident Management Team is currently the incident commander for the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
