Heres proof that when a community does not want what the rich and powerful want to force on them it can be derailed. Earlier this year the Boyle Heights community chased a downtown Realtor and his bike tour back to downtown, then they stopped the Mariachi 5K because they felt it insulted their musicians. Now they have apparently put a stop to the Metropolitan Transit Authoritys plan to do away with Mariachi Plaza and put up a sleek $49 million dollar shopping plaza eight stories tall with six floors of parking, and two floors of medical offices, a gym, restaurants and shops. This past Thursday some 200 people turned out at a meeting with Metro saying they were ready to retreat on that plan and to start all over and hopefully including the community. The LA Times says that none of those who spoke at the meeting spoke in favor of the plan. The Mayor and his co-horts and a few organizations have a plan to revitalize the Los Angeles River, a hugely expensive plan-price tag 1 Billion big ones, but that actually will cost much more than that, and that will do nothing to revitalize the LA River or to bring more people to the river. What it will do is to increase taxes, line the pockets of politicians and their well connected friends pockets, and create more park space in areas that already have thousands of acres of park lands while ignoring those areas that have little or none, and raise rents in communities along the river and that is not wanted by the majority of those who live in the communities along the river. A lot of money has already been spent at the river on little parks (built at not so little prices) that are not maintained and mainly used by vandals and the homeless. As there are plans to maintain anything that has already been done at the river there is no plan to maintain anything that is proposed. How do you revitalize the LA River? First clean up the water (water in the LA River is purple pipe water and street run off that contains every chemical known to man and many not none to man), get the trash out of the river waters, trees and rocks and keep it out. Put up signage listing the rules, hours, how to contact police and emergency personnel and provide security. Those things have never been addressed and should have been years ago. Its time for those who oppose the Billions Dollar Plan to speak up and out and put a stop to Garcettis Folly.
