Here’s the summary of Jonathan Gruber’s recently publicized remarks on Obamacare (ACA). 1) If the ACA had been written honestly and clearly, it never would have passed. Even with Democrats firmly in control of both houses of congress. 2) The financial aspects of the ACA were deliberately distorted to make it look better than it really was. 3) Legislators and activists pushing the ACA were banking on the “stupidity” of the American public. 4) He said I’d rather have the legislation than not have it. In other words, in his view, the dishonesty, the distortion, and the trickery used to get the bill passed were justified and appropriate. Another way to state #4 is the ends justify the means, which is a fundamental liberal tenet. The entire law should be scrapped and market-based reforms enacted in its place.
