Herington, KS, a major Rock Island employer, got involved in its own way to help celebrate the Rock Islands Centennial back in 1952. Here is a cake baked by Gaius Masten and decorated by Mabel Masten for the local festivities. The Mastens were long time Herington area Bakery owners. The top portion of the cake was sent to the president of the Rock Island Railroad at the time, John Dow Farrington, in Chicago. It was made to serve 1,400 and was extremely fragile.
