Hey! Don’t know if you have trouble getting out of bed in the morning, but this might help... ------------------ The Wakie Story ------------------ My name’s Jack. I’m definitely not a morning person. I read until late at night, and have to drag myself out of bed in the morning. This wouldn’t be so bad, if not for how Mr. Daniels stares at me when I show up late to work. It’s been an ongoing problem, but last week, when he called me into his office, I knew I crossed a line. He was about to fire me, but then he paused. “Hold on,” he said, “give me your phone.” And then he told me to go back to my desk. Twenty minutes later he came by my cubicle and tossed me the phone. “See you in the morning,” he said. I still had my job! But that evening, I let the same thing happen. Wrapped up in a novel, I heard birds chirping when I finally turned off the light. I had to be up in three hours. I was sure that I could wake up, but that’s what got me in this mess in the first place. I fell asleep… A phone call! I shot from bed. “It must be work, I must be late, oh no!,” I thought. When I grabbed my phone I saw that it was still 7 am, two hours before I needed to be at work. Who was calling me? It wasn’t Mr. Daniels… “Hello…” my voice was so groggy. “Hello lovely. Still sleeping?” It was a beautiful woman’s voice with a bit of an accent, but I had no idea who it belonged to. I heard the sounds of traffic in the background. “Where is your accent from?” “It’s from where I’m from. And where I’m calling from.” “And where is that?” “London, of course.” I was wide awake now. Did I know anyone from London? “I have no idea who you are but I’m very happy to hear you!” I said. “I was sure it was my boss calling me so early.” “I’m Kathy, what’s your name?” she asked. Suddenly, sleeping was the farthest thing from my mind. I wanted to know everything about this girl. “I’m Jack, what time is it there?” It’s 2 pm. I’m on my lunch break.” “Really, where do you work?” “I work at the British Library,” she said matter-of-factly. “Kathy, I’m a bit confused. Do we know each other?” “We do now Jack!” “Yes but, why did you call to wake me up?” “Waking people up is my hobby…” The warmth of her laughter came through the phone. “…And being woken up. This morning a guy in Hong Kong got me out of bed, and after a shower and a cup of tea I rang a girl in Toronto.” “Old friends? You just dial a random number? Kathy, this is exciting, but I’m completely lost.” “New friends, we—” BEEEP, BEEP The phone started to go crazy. “This always happens too soon, Jack! It’s going to cut off. Anyway, rise and shine. Enjoy your day!” “Thank you for being the most beautiful alarm clock I’ve ever had!” “My pleasure, Jack. You should try it sometime…” And then three quick beeps marked the end of the call. Still not sure why I had received that mysterious call, but happy that I did, I took my time getting ready for work and made it to the office before Mr. Daniels. —————— The End —————— Wakie is a closed community of people that help each other waking up on time.
