Area Manager Sappi Southern Africa Ltd - Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal We require a suitably qualified candidate to lead & implement regional strategic objectives & targets to optimise fibre resources in the area & ensure that the continued supply into Sappi’s markets are delivered at the lowest cost & ensures a sustainable supply of fibre within resource & SHEQ parameters. Minimum Requirements National Diploma in Forestry, Agriculture, Horticulture Bachelors degree will be advantageous Up to twelve years experience Ability to implement strategic plans on a tactical and operational level. Job Specification Harvesting Sales Plan Ensure that a tactical harvesting plan is compiled from the approved APO in order to optimize efficiencies. Ensure that a sales plan for the area is developed and ensure collaboration with other relevant departments Develop an annual budget based on the approved APO Ensure that the monthly sales volume is monitored & reconciled with the sales plan of each product in order to meet market demand and Ensure that delivered cost is minimised and returns optimised Manage all operations to ensure production & that harvesting compartment plans are accurate, incorporate safety, environmental and optimized production requirements, and that waste is minimised. Re-establishment Ensure that the re-establishment program (planting & coppice regeneration) for the Area is consolidated & monitored, and manage plant orders with Nurseries, and ensure that the Temporary Unplanted targets are achieved within budget constraints. Monitor operations to ensure the achievement of silvicultural standards and comply with service level agreements Crop Maintenance Ensure that crops are monitored to ensure that through the timing of operations (weed control, pest & disease management) maximum yields within cost constraints are achieved. Ensure the achievement of silvicultural standards and that all operations comply with service level agreement Fire protection Ensure that the Area uses the Fire Risk Management System (FRMS) to identify risks, record & implement fire control procedures in order to ensure the effective protection of people, plantation and other assets from forest fires Monitor the readiness of all resources and their ability to respond immediately in the event of fires. Ensure that relationships are developed & maintained with neighbours & corporates within the FPA to foster co-operation and support among members. Ensure that Incident Command System and Unified Command principles are practically applied to minimise fire losses in resource constrained emergencies Alien plant control Ensure that an integrated tactical plan is in place & monitor the Annual Plan of Operations for both commercial and open areas comply with standards and service level agreements within the District. Road Maintenance Ensure that road networks are managed proactively & maintained in order to ensure accessibility, the effective utilization of equipment, costs within budget, and mitigate the impacts on environment. Infrastructure & fleet management Ensure that a tactical plan is developed for the maintenance of company assets such as buildings, villages and company houses and monitor conditions to ensure standards are upheld (hygiene & legal compliance) within budget constraints Ensure that the vehicle fleet is monitored and operational efficiencies are maximised within the terms of the lease agreement, Sappi guidelines & budget. Stakeholder relations Monitor relationships with communities, and other internal & external stakeholders to ensure company image is upheld, risks mitigated and relationships enhanced. Innovation Management Continuously evaluate , systems, opportunities and technologies to eliminate waste, improve productivity and profitability Facilitate the change management process involved in ensuring continuous improvement mindset in teams Contractor management Identify and negotiate new contracts with contractors in line with the Sappi contract renewal procedure. Ensure that an accurate rate is maintained within budget parameters. Monitor contractor relationships and that quality, delivery and compliance standards as set out in the job instruction system and/or service level agreement are adhered to. Support the Forestry/Harvesting Manager in the negotiation of contractor and activity rates within budget constraints Policies & procedures / general Ensure that legislative and company policies & procedures are complied with Ensure that TCS procedures are adhered to, timber complies with Mills specifications and ISO9001 requirements Ensure maintenance of FSC certification People management Lead & performance manage subordinates to attain objectives Build effective teams & manage employee relations. Provide coaching support to subordinates in order to facilitate realistic career paths through Personal Development Plans Ensure a talent based recruitment focus is maintained throughout management area Administration Prepare the annual budget for the district. Forecast & monitor monthly activity & overhead costs Report regularly on all relevant activities Monitor and maximise company contribution from all resources, ensuring that the area is run as a viable profit centre.
