Hey drummers here is a sample of how you would musically apply a chapter I am working on for my book to comping/ or solo . The challenge here is to play the static jazz ride /2 and 4 left foot and then play a fully improvised and musical solo using the table of time from whole notes to 16th notes between bd and snare with different stickings/footings (minus quarter/8th/16 quintuplets and septuplets which Ill explore later on) and move it around the drum set as melodic phrases(and then drop off the two and 4 LF hi hat and use that with the same idea as a fourth hand as well, kind of like Chapins book on steroids) . This is me taking a first shot hack at it. And then modulate all four limbs to the double time/ the next highest five 6 or 7 on the table of time etc (like wynton marsalis- autumn leaves) and convert all limbs to odd meters. Flubs all over the place here, but that is the point. to make a mess and try to truly improvise with your limbs while either a two limb or one limb ostinato are locked in (reach for things you arent sure if you can execute or not in real time to train you brain to not be scared to go for things), keep going until you can go for anything you want in your mind. All the varied ride stuff will be a breeze after you can do this (unless you put all of this against varied ride which is nearly impossible unless you work out all the permutations). note: This idea doesnt really allow for much bd feathering because you are using it as a third hand to solo with.
