Hey, everyone who went to DFX, heres a PSA, so FYI. P.S. Ill be really super pissed if I have scabies cause of this and go all FML. Heres the original post from Steve Yang: SCABIES MITES in the dance scene. I had a doctors appointment today, and was diagnosed with Scabies. Its a type of mite that burrows into your skin, and is very contagious among people with whom youve had close contact with (i.e. dancing and cuddling). Symptoms: small, red bumps on the skin, spread over the entire body, accompanied by an intense itch that is worse at night. The itch gets more intense, and the bumps get more numerous over time, and do not go away on their own without treatment. I personally thought it was eczema for a month, until I discovered that eczema treatments were not working. I also had concurrent, compounding eczema along with Scabies, so if youve been treating a persistent, intense itch as eczema and it isnt effective, consider that it may be Scabies, and consult a doctor! Eczema is not contagious, whereas Scabies is. Affected areas: basically the entire body, except for scalp and genitals (places with hair); especially apparent in the webbing of fingers/toes, wrists, ankles, waistline, armpits, elbows... places with folds and buildup of dead skin. What to do: the only treatment that will cure Scabies is a prescription, so if you have any of these symptoms please see a doctor ASAP to get it fixed. The treatment kills them after a single treatment, a second treatment is necessary to kill off any hatched eggs, but it does not guard against re-infection. While I may be able to rid myself of Scabies, if I encounter them again, I will get infected again. Having Scabies doesnt infer anything about your general hygiene or other practices. If youve been exposed, you can be infected, simple as that. Being silent will only perpetuate the problem. If we do not come together as a community to defeat this problem, it will continue to persist. Repost, share, and spread the word! Where to go: if you have insurance, go ahead and see your normal doctor. I have no insurance, so I went to a free clinic (sffc.org: San Francisco Free Clinic). There should be a free clinic in your area, check it out on Google. I made my appointment on Monday and had my visit today (Thursday). Please feel free to cut-and-paste this post for maximum exposure. You can share it, but I have my privacy settings such that those who are not my friends cannot see this post. You can also tag me in the post so I can help answer any questions that come up. Below is a list of events Ive attended since my first possible exposure. If youve been to any of these events, and experience the above symptoms within the 4-6 week incubation period, you may have Scabies: Nov 8: Rose City Blues, Portland OR (first possible exposure) Nov 15: Blues Bliss, Orlando FL Dec 13: Gender Bender Recess, San Francisco CA (first symptoms) Dec 26: Lindy Focus Jan 10: Denver Fusion Exchange My weekly events: Shades of Blues Beat the Blues South Bay Fusion Friday Night Blues Mission: Fusion House parties PM me if you have any other questions or concerns. I have been diagnosed with scabies. If youve danced with me in the past weeks or have hugged/cuddled me, please read the above and be warned.
