Hey folks, I have a question with a focus toward my painter pals, but anyone can feel free to jump in. I had a great conversation with a potential client for some of my work. They have already bought a few gielcee prints and would like to step up to an original. They have been musing over a major painting, one that required several months of work and was completed a few years ago. Many of you have seen it and offered positve feedback and high praise. Well to shorten a long conversation, they suggested I make changes that effect both the narrative and the composition in order to suit thier own vision of the work. Eliminate a figure or two here and add one over there. Take out an abstract shape that was interpreted as a violent image in an otherwise peaceful and reflective painting, with the freedom of my own judgement as how to apply these changes. I am certain you know me well enough to know how I responded, and to be quite honest, I did enjoy the discussion, and was moved by the amount of time and thought given. I was not at all insulted or put off by the comments. They were offered with humility and respect. (There were even retouched images of my work emailed to me to illustrate those suggestions.) Id like to know how you would have responded, and if the amount of the sale would effect your decisions. For the record, it is the most expensive painting in my studio. Have at it....
