Hey guys, now that postering part one is finished, heres some platform as promised! Beth Barkhouse - Platform. Hello, fellow Acadia students! My name is Beth Barkhouse and I am running to be your next ASU President. I am currently in my first year of the Bachelor of Education program, though I graduated this past May with a Bachelor of Arts in Politics. I was born and raised in Nova Scotia and first fell in love with the Acadia campus through my involvement with NSSSA. I am the perfect person to elect as the new face of your Students’ Union, because, if I can be honest without being cheesy, I owe a lot of who I am as a person to Acadia. As a first year student, I had a strong group of leaders who inspired me to get involved. I spent the last three years of my undergrad involved with House Council, the last two of which were as the House President of Roy Jodrey Hall. Being so involved with in-house politics helped me to become more involved in the broader ASU because of how invested I am in this school. I feel compelled to provide the same opportunities to incoming students that were provided to me. Most importantly, I think that all incoming students should have an executive that makes them feel represented and makes their voice heard. Over my five years here I have seen a lot. The Students’ Union has the ability to hold the administration accountable and ensure that the interests and well-being of the students are always held at the forefront of all decisions made. It is my aim to work with the university and related bodies including but not limited to Chartwells and Residence Life, to bring to fruition solutions to problems that have been identified by a wide variety of students. The need to work with these student services has been made especially clear at events designed to seek out the voices of students, such as the Student Life Summit. This years Executive has started a project with the town that would aid students in the quest to find livable and affordable off campus housing. The Housing Authority would let students easily see what living situations are available to them, both on and off campus. This is a project that I would be thrilled to see to fruition. The ASU President also sits on the Town and Gown committee with members of Wolfville Town Council to ensure that the student voice is heard. This committee, in conjunction with a report conducted over last Summer that has helped lead to the idea of the Housing Authority. If put in place, it would ensure that students would be as prepared as possible to move off campus. This year’s executive has worked hard to ensure that students left campus and got into Wolfville, through events such as Paint the Town Red and Blue. One of the major goals for my executive would be to continue to foster that community by holding events on campus that appeal to residents of Wolfville as well. This makes sure that the door is always open for members of the community to come onto campus and to interact with the student population in a positive and productive way, changing the conversation from “us versus them” to more of a community dynamic. Another goal that I would like to achieve is one related to Mental Health. Matt has spent his three years on the ASU Executive making mental health a priority, and I would like to continue to build on what he has done. I have spent time this year working with the Mental Health Society and gauging their needs when it comes to support from the ASU. I believe that mental health is one of the most important priorities on our campus, and is something I would like to make a major focus of my presidency. In closing, I would like to thank you for reading this far and for being engaged in student politics. I am really proud of the change that I have helped affect thus far in my time at Acadia and I would really value the opportunity to continue working for the student body. If you would like more information on my platform or if you have any questions, you can visit February12.ca or send me a friend request. Cheers, Beth
