Hey, you Riverdale kids! Stay outta Arkham! So, between all the posts and tweeting done recently about the Lovecraftian themes in the Afterlife with Archie series and my comic shop guy telling me it was one of his favourite series this year, I caved and bought the TPB and the Lovecraft/Sabrina issue. And man, am I feeling the buyers remorse this morning because folks? Folks, Im sorry, but it just aint. that. good. The Lovecraftian stuff particularly is forced, derivative, and just generally lacklustre. *Why* is this series popular? I think its partly due to the pop-cultural legitimacy that the Mythos absorbs whenever an arguably bigger intellectual property (in this case Archie & the Gang) attempts to appropriate the themes, however clumsily this may be done. Look. Im glad that other peeps are liking our thing. But Im a little tired of everybody jumping up and down, clapping their hands with glee, and saying thank-you-thank-you-thank-you when some scraps get thrown their way.
