Hi All. I felt it necessary to make a post about the vote on the National Popular Vote this past week in the Oklahoma State Senate. I have received hundreds of emails, messages and phone calls on this topic, and I want to state emphatically that I voted NO on SB906, the bill to make Oklahoma part of a state compact compelling our electors to vote for the presidential candidate that wins the majority of the popular vote. I not only voted NO in committee last session and on the floor this last Wednesday, but I also questioned and debated against this measure passionately both publicly and privately since first hearing of this effort. Much has been said on Facebook and elsewhere on the many, many reasons neither Oklahomans nor Republicans should support such a measure and I agree essentially with all these points. National Popular Vote is clearly a circumvention of the constitution via a state compact, and will further erode state sovereignty. From an Oklahoma point of view, the National Popular Vote would end the state minority protection by making our two electors not related to population irrelevant, a minority protection which makes Oklahoma much more relevant than we would be otherwise. Our founders insisted on protecting the states rights of small states, and this is one such protection. Removing this protection goes directly against the Republic created by our founders, and as the 17th Amendment stripped much of states influence in DC, this as well moves us further away from a Republic. From a Republican/Conservative point of view, this is beyond a no-brainer. We are the reddest state in the nation, and should take pride in the fact that conservative candidates can spend their time campaigning elsewhere. The alternative is that we cease to be a conservative state; why would any Republican want this? My Democrat friends might like this in the short term, but they must remember that as we destroy our founders intentions in the interest of short term self-gratification, the worm always turns and I sincerely dont believe Oklahoma Democrats would want to live in a state that is no longer relevant in the election of their president. Of course, I always respect those with whom I disagree but I wanted to make it clear to my friends and constituents that I vehemently opposed this effort at every turn, and will continue to oppose any measure which I feel is not in the best interest of Oklahoma or in the spirit of the Republic our founders intended. For those that have researched this and thanked me for my opposition I appreciate your kind words.
