Hi Everybody. Ive been lurking in the background looking at everyones wonderful photos and stories. Ive learned a lot from your posts and comments! I love this site! Here is another bull story to share. My husband had been transferred with the Highway Dept. to District 2 from 4 where we had lived for a long time. We had moved to Tucumcari and my husband had worked on the new I-40 highway for 7 or 8 years. But when the job was over he had to move. Two of our kids were in High School, and our baby was just starting to school. We were also building a new house. My father Louis Szabo had died in 1977, and we had taken over the farm and ranch for my mother Florence Murphy Szabo. The kids helped with the ranch duties, even the baby Suzy who was born loving the outdoors! So Daddy went, South, and we stayed and took care of things. One day our big Black Angus Bull, Andy, broke through the fence to go visit a bunch of ladies in the adjoining pasture. So, after pondering my options, I decided that Id better go get him. Our fences were like a sieve, and our cows had been getting out on a regular basis. Our kids and my husband had been rebuilding fences, but they didnt get it all done before Bill left to go South. My son had said he was getting into trouble having to leave class to come home and help me all the time, so,I decided I could get him in without too much trouble. The bull weighed about 2000 pounds, but he had never threatened me at all. So I hiked to where I found where he had gone threw, and I pulled up a big sunflower to use as a educator for Andy. I approached him, gave him an encouraging swat and told him to go home. He minded me and started plodding along to home. All of a sudden I heard voices and laughter. The men who worked at the junk yard just beside where I was said, hey Lady, do you think that bull is afraid of that sunflower? Ha ha ha! I had been spotted! I kept on going and so did Andy. When we got back to, our pasture, all of our cows came up to Andy mooing and even licking his face? I patched the fence and went home a little worse for wear! But apparently Andy was either scared of me and my sunflower or he was ready to go home! Ill say this, the neighbors cows sure had some pretty calves in the Spring! Frances Szabo Shay
