Hi Everyone Well what a week that was. However, as a break in tradition, I’ll do next week’s diary first and then a review of the week, so here goes; Monday – Four Crosses - Cannock. Folk and Country music. Tuesday – Spittalbrook, Stafford – Mainly Folk – can be a bit lively and noisy, but great atmosphere. Wednesday – Ye Old Rose and Crown, Stafford – Mixed acoustic session hosted by The Spring Chickens and a great night guaranteed, all and everything welcome, and free sandwiches! Thursday – Roebuck at Hilderstone – Mainly contemporary folk as some early pop stuff, loads of sing-along songs and some of the best free pub grub in the area. Thursday – Monthly Crown at Hyde Lea Trad Folk session. Attracts some of the very best singers, musicians and poets in and out of the area. If trad or trad style is your bag, this is the place for you. Also has brilliant free food! OK – Last week then. Monday at the MET brought us Jess Morgan. I have seen Jess at Bromyard and was looking forward to it immensely, and am delighted to say that I was not disappointed! Maybe there could have been a few more people there, but those of us that were there were treated to an exhibition of folk song as it should be done, brilliant guitar playing, singing and some truly wonderful songs. Tuesday at the Spittalbrook was great. I got there a bit late and it was in full flow when I arrived, but the atmosphere for some reason was buzzing and we all had a great laugh with some really nice songs and performances. Wednesday again at the MET. If you know that Dan Walsh is playing the MET, then you know you need to buy your tickets in advance as it is always a sell out. Dan often appears with a partner at these events, I have seen him with Sunjay Brayne and also Suhail Khan, but this time he was with the Canadian singer Meaghan Blanchard. If you have been to Dan’s ‘double header’ gigs before, you know that you will be in for a treat (He don’t gig with just anybody y’know ….), and so it was with Meaghan, she was stunning and not only had a pure and very sweet voice, but she also judged her Stafford Audience well too, with uproarious anecdotes and tales. Brilliant. Dan wasn’t too bad either. The guy who is doing the sound at the MET does a wonderful job, both concerts I have been to this week there have been done perfectly and it’s not often you can say that. For what is effectively an acoustic set and many sound engineers seem unable to resist buggering about with the equipment and destroying the intimacy of the sound – no so here, so well done, whoever you are! Friday (last night) was the long awaited Armistice Pals concert. Firstly can I thank everyone who turned up and handed over their hard earned cash, I was quite overwhelmed at the response – the room was packed out! All of the artists gave their time and talents free and not only that but many had been rehearsing and practicing for weeks to get it right, some people even wrote new songs especially for the occasion. I can’t possibly that everyone who made a contribution to the night, but if everyone enjoyed it even half as much as I did, then it was an unqualified success. Thanks to the generosity of everyone, we raised a total of £335.00, of which only £40.00 were needed for our expenses (£20.00 room hire and £20.00 printing of flyers) which leaves us a total of £295.00 for the Peace Charities. Well done everyone. There may well be a Video CD of the night, or clips of the night which we may use to try to raise even more money for this worthwhile cause. Thanks again, and I hope to see one or more of you at one of the events next week. Cheers Steve
