Hi Folks, Much to our delight, the third book in The Adventures - TopicsExpress

Hi Folks, Much to our delight, the third book in The Adventures of... series by Alfred Elwes...arrived this afternoon, a wonderful original first edition of The Adventures of a CAT and a Fine Cat Too, published in 1857, by Addey & Co. This image, by Harrison Weir is interesting because as an admirer of cats, this is one of the earliest images of cats he would have drawn, and in this case, in anthropomorphic style, a style later adopted and adapted by a younger artist and cat fancier, Louis Wain, into the fun caricatures and cartoons of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. This image is from the frontispiece and is entitled Portrait of a Lady. We also include here, the logo portion of the book cover, showing the embossed gold printed image of the cat with quill in mouth. Also added are two close-ups, one showing the name H.WEIR on the seat of her chair...the other showing a book entitled Chum, or The White Cat of Peckham, very appropo, given that at the time this was drawn, Harrison Weir was known to have been living at Peckham, in London, across the road from the poet Eliza Cook, whose books on poetry he was occasionally called upon to produce illustrations for. Enjoy!
