Hi I posted on here a few weeks ago about the roadworks problem and the lack of engagement by Tameside with local Mossley residents about the works coming up and the alternative routes put in place. I contacted Tameside at least four weeks ago and have finally had a response - see below. The lady in question also left me a voicemail. Re: Roadworks Enquiry Dear Mrs S Peet, Thank you for your correspondence, and I apologise for not responding sooner and can assure you no discourtesy was intended. Making Roughtown Road one way was considered during the initial stages of planning however, it was decided not to make Roughtown Road one way as it as felt this would encourage traffic to use it and it would still not be a suitable route, even in one direction, we always expected it to be used to some degree but did not want to encourage people who would not normally use it to start. The closure of Mill Lane has been postponed until 20th and 21st October to ensure it does not conflict with other works within Mossley. The works on Mossley Road have over run due to an unidentified fuel pipe, work has had to be put on hold whilst this is identified. As the retaining wall was removed prior to discovering this pipe the traffic signals could not be removed as the road is not being supported and it would not be safe to do this due to the vast amount of vehicles and the classes of vehicles using this route. The completion date for these works is expected to be October 2014. If you do wish to discuss the issues above, please do not hesitate to contact me on 0161 342 3927. Yours sincerely, Lauren Redfern Traffic Operations It seems that Roughtown Road was discounted because it was perhaps deemed unsafe but I would argue that going via Grasscroft (no passing traffic for part of the road) or the junction at Greenfield station can be just as hairy. And surely one way is better than two way! I wonder if anyone from the Traffic team has actually assessed how much this route is used outside of the roadworks. And the reality is that Mossley will no doubt have more roadworks in place over the next 12 months so both this and the safety problems are not going away. I have not started the petition following Ellie Shember-Critchley s response, which was much appreciated. I cant attend the council meeting tonight due to childcare commitments but I hope Ellie can raise this and perhaps come back to the group with the thoughts of the Council on how we proceed. Apologies for such a long post!
