Hi all, Wendy here! Did you know that California City is the 3rd largest city in the state of California by land mass? Our city is 203.5 square miles. Our shelter has 2 employees who work opposite shifts and they are responsible for animal control calls within the city. Many will say But theres only 14,000 people there, how full can the shelter get? but heres the thing, the rest of the space is wide open desert and therein lies the problem. We are a prime spot for pet dumping because there is just so little out here. If you could take a few minutes to watch this video and see the shelter, itd be much appreciated. What people often dont realize is that the shelter covers a LOT of area but only has 18 dog kennels and 2 employees. Those of us working to network and fundraise and get these animals out to rescues are overwhelmed. We will get the shelter basically empty and two days later its overflowing again. In any case, Ive noticed a decline in shares as well as pledging. We understand but please know that this is about the ONLY chance the majority of our awesome dogs and cats get since there is very little foot traffic due to its rural location. If you could also keep in mind that just because there arent a ton of dogs or cats in the photo album doesnt mean there arent plenty more...I am just one me and I have 4 kids and my own animals as well as all the transporting and assisting local animal situations I do so I only make it to the shelter for good pictures and checking out temperament once a week, consistently. I know several will say just put up a quick photo or do temp checks later but the problem with not doing it all at once is the inordinate number of questions I dont have the answers to clogging up threads that few bother to read as it is. I have found that until I have as much info as I can get, I dont like posting updates to the album. So just know that for every dog you see being rescued, there are more right behind it who may well already BE there!
