Hiding from God Genesis 3:8-10 “When they heard the sound of GOD strolling in the garden in the evening breeze, the Man and his Wife hid in the trees of the garden, hid from GOD. GOD called to the Man: ‘Where are you?’ He said, ‘I heard you in the garden and I was afraid because I was naked. And I hid’ ” Genesis 3:8-10 (MSG). For me, this is one of the saddest texts in the entire Bible. Before sin, Adam and Eve spent quality time walking and talking with God face to face as a friend; but when sin entered the picture, it separated them from that perfect relationship, and “when they heard the sound of God strolling in the garden,” they were afraid—they ran from their Friend. From that moment on, the sight of God has struck fear in the human heart. (Throughout Scripture, one of the first things a heavenly being says when meeting a human is, “Fear not.” “Don’t be afraid.”) Our own sin and guilt are the very reason we are afraid when we are faced with Perfection; it is in these moments that our own imperfect natures become abundantly clear to us. When the serpent said, “You will have knowledge of good and evil,” I’m sure Adam and Eve had no idea how drastic the difference would be, and that with their disobedience would come the pain of separation from God. You see, choosing evil causes separation from all that is good, because embracing sin means turning away from God—the Giver of Goodness. It is the embracing of the knowledge of evil that separates us from our Creator; it is this holding on to the knowledge of evil that drives a wedge between us and God. The serpent may not have lied on that fateful day when he said, “You will know both good and evil,” but he sure did leave out something very important—the consequence of that knowledge. ~Randy & Trena Reed
