Hlanganani News November/December 2014: Dear All How can I begin to thank you all for your prayers, love and support, as this year has been awesome, maybe the kids have a different story, but I have heard nothing to the contrary. (Please let us know if you do hear things to the contrary, so we can fix it!) I have had a time to thank the special “hands on” people who practically have put their shoulders to the wheel and done their bit, this is what makes the whole team work, as each of us cannot do it on our own. Josi has been a star and a blessing and an answer to prayer, keeping me company and bouncing ideas off her and an essential support as this job and its decisions can get quite lonely sometimes. Thank you precious one, Josi. Enjoy your memories of us as you write below: Hi everyone, In the last few weeks quite a lot has happened. The family whose shack has burnt down is saying thank you to everyone that helped them during this difficult time. Other great news is that the Token system is starting to pay off. We were very happy to see that a lot of children took this chance and went to tutoring at Mother Touch Academy. On top of that we are also very proud of Thabo who not only received many certificates for his efforts at school but also committed his life to the Lord at church where the Hlanganani team has been praying for him. He went on an outreach to Venda and was able to help by interpreting in 6 languages! I’ve also had the privilege to attend Nonhlanhla’s graduation from Luxe College where she absolved a two years course to become an auxiliary social worker. Learning that there are only three social workers for more than 200,000 people in Diepsloot was shocking. Nonetheless the ceremony was so vibrant and energetic and it was just fun to see everyone being happy and proud of their achievements. On Saturday we had our Christmas party(sponsored by Snyman’s Incorporated) at the Johannesburg zoo where I organized a treasure hunt for them in order to get to know each other better and to learn about animals from all over the world. After all, this was the first visit to the zoo for most of them, including the home based carers. The four best teams received some German sweets and little flags that I brought from home. As the day turned to its end and it started raining, the children were each given some sweets and a huge backpack filled with Christmas presents by Meadow Feeds. All in all it was such a fun day- for the children and for us! With love from Josi. We have such positives amongst the world of negatives – it’s great to get good news. Latest statistics on HIV (from World Aids Day on the 1st DEC) is that 450 000 died of HIV related illnesses in 2013 in S Africa, which is 9000 a week. (Can this be compared to the total of 7000 who have died of the terrifying Ebola which began in March). Nevertheless, amongst a growing problem, we submit that we can only do what we can do IN GOD, and never give up! Thank you again for your prayers and support. Have a wonderful Christmas and holiday season and see you in January 2015!
