An Islamic group attacked the military in Midsayap town early on Monday, but then fled reinforcement arrived. After the attacks took rebels some 15 teachers and farmers hostage and used them as human shields when soldiers went on the attack. A spokesman for the Army said that several of the hostages had been released but that some still held as prisoners. The attacks in Midsayap was carried out by a rebel group that is not directly linked to the rebels hiding in the city of Zamboanga, about 25 mil away. Attack helicopters attacked rebel strongholds in the city on Monday. AFP
