Home Secretary: Independent Scotland would undermine UK national security.UK government says Scotland’s independence from the UK would seriously undermine the British national security and the Scottish as well, media reports said. The report by Home Secretary Theresa May warned that if Scotland votes to become independent next year it would be unable to protect itself alone and it would a long time for an independent Scotland to build its own defences, which would directly affect what will be left from the UK. The report comes at a time when Britain’s three main parties believe they are winning the battle to keep Scotland as opinion polls show only a third of Scots would vote for independence on September 18, 2014. However, Prime Minister David Camerons ruling two-party coalition and the opposition Labour party strongly oppose Scottish independence and fear a Yes vote could dilute Britains global clout and imperil its Scotland-based nuclear deterrent. In the meantime the risk would be of security levels diminishing to the detriment of both Scotland and the continuing UK, said Theresa May in the Scottish capital, Edinburgh. The report also said an independent Scotland would be less able to protect itself against threat without proper planning and investment, whether it’s international terrorism or cyber attacks. It added that such a situation would result in an increased risk to the Scottish people. The Yes Scotland campaign, led by the Scottish National Party (SNP), wants independence to be a reality by 2016 after next years referendum. The SNP believes the removal of Britains submarine-based nuclear arsenal from Scotland in the event of a Yes vote and its determination to ensure Scottish troops no longer take part in the UK’s illegal wars would make it less of a target for terror attacks. Meanwhile, Christine Grahame, an SNP lawmaker in Scotlands devolved parliament, poured scorn on the Home Secretary’s report, saying its contents were the same old tired and discredited nonsense. This is Project Fear at its worst - trying to politicize issues of security and anti-terrorism in this way is the height of irresponsibility, she said.
