Hope for Today I remember finding my first sponsor. I had met - TopicsExpress

Hope for Today I remember finding my first sponsor. I had met her years before when I made the transition from Alateen into Al-Anon. I thought she was odd. She always smiled and laughed. At that point in recovery, I thought people who didn’t take the healing process seriously had nothing to offer. I saw my sponsor-to-be a few years later at a convention. I didn’t think of her again until I was desperate. Someone close to me had moved away, and I thought I wouldn’t survive the loss. I had been in Al-Anon for three years and still didn’t have a sponsor. My anguish brought me to my knees. I begged God for help, climbed into bed, and promptly fell asleep. I awoke to birds singing. Clear as a bell, a voice deep within told me to ask the “odd” lady to be my sponsor. I knew this voice was my Higher Power’s. “You’ve got to be kidding,” I said. My Higher Power kept repeating the instructions. I was in enough pain to try anything, so I asked her to be my sponsor. She was open to the idea and suggested we both pray on it for a week and then talk again. When I said I still wanted her to be my sponsor, she agreed. This experience taught me about listening to and acting on God’s will, even when it seems to say something strange. My first sponsor and I ended up together for eight years. She became the key to my program. Her love led me toward a sense of belonging. I will forever be grateful for her presence in my life. Thought for the Day A sponsor is a special person who helps me make the program come alive. “…Experience shows that sponsorship is a valuable aid to personal understanding and use of the Al-Anon program of recovery.” (Sponsorship, What It’s All About, p. 3)
