Hopefully, all made it home without incident. It was a solid social and the after party allowed the GF/Helena players get to know one another. The game was as expected. Butte play a simple but effective style of rugby and made it difficult to secure usable ball. Unfortunately, their dominance in the set pieces meant our back line received the ball in retreat or not at all. As such, we had difficulty making ground, although there were moments of offensive brilliance from broken play. Defensively, we missed the majority of initial tackles, were slow to establish a defensive line or retreat to support players in isolation, undisciplined in defense at the breakdown and entered contact with very high body positions. Despite these problems, we made a brave stand against the best in the MRU. By the second half, play improved markedly--bolstered by some strong individual performances--and Butte could score just one try over the course of the second 40 minutes. If we can improve that radically over a 5 minute half-time, we should be able to make some significant improvements over the course of this week. Sometimes in the wake of defeat, teams can become frustrated and their collective resolve can weaken. But thats not in our character. Great things are never easy! See you on Tuesday, 5PM, Centennial Park for the Helena contingent.
