For my part, Ill just add that there is a great deal to be said about the musical creativity and literacy of women in the 18th century and earlier and later, but the spurious claims that grab headlines do more harm than good. Barbara Ployer, Barbara Strozzi, Maddalena Casulana, Francesca Caccini, Chiara Margarita Cozzolani, and, yes, Anna Magdalena Bach, have stories to tell. But we wont hear them if all we can manage to imagine these women doing is writing the music of their male siblings or fathers or spouses.
