The Kuntaw broke off as the Hand and Foot fighting style which also practiced Arnis as the armed weapon art. There were other arts that grew from the main arts, such as buno, gumol, and lampugan (all wristling type of art), and sikaran, tadyakan, and sipaan and (type of foot arts) The arts such as Arnis and Kuntaw were also carefully hidden in the play of Moro-moro dance depecting the conquering and Christianization of the Filipinos. Dalubhasa (masters) and kasapi (members) established training sites and hiding places in the Mountain and forest to continue training and development of the art. It was after a century latter, when a more widespread hispanization of the island had been achieved that training in fighting arts such kuntawan by the katutubong native Filipino was again allowed to exist in the open, as a sport for exhibition. But in the southern most part of the country. the predominantly Muslim groups in Mindanao, the art of Kuntaw continued to flourish as a secret form of combat, but exclusive only to the Maharlika (royal family)and virtually did not undergo any changes. Kuntaw, on the other hand is basically hand and foot fighting techniques utilizing the sly, Catlike, soft and hard movement characteristic of those practiced by fore- fathers of the Muslim royalties for the tribes physical and mental and spiritually conditioning.
