How does your hospital measure up? Check out the c-section and VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) birth rates of Ontario Hospitals here: cesareanrates/ontario-cs-and-vbac-rates/ The World Health Organization recommends that the caesarean section rate should not be higher than 10% to 15%. The caesarean delivery rate in Canada increased steadily from 17.5% of deliveries in 1994–1995 to 23.7% in 2002–2003, and in 2010-11 reached as high as 51% depending on the hospital. Moreover, caesarean delivery was associated with high maternal and neonatal complication rates. According to the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC), vaginal delivery represents the safest route for the fetus and newborn in the first and subsequent (VBC) pregnancies. A large (over 5000 births) US study on the viability of VBAC found a 75% success rate. In Ontario your risk of having a repeat c-section birth can be as high as 96.8% depending on the doctor and hospital. Want to decrease your risk of having a cesarean birth?
