How many of you are familiar with Rollover Pass? As your next Texas Land Commissioner, Im deeply opposed to current efforts to close this outstanding fishing location which has been a treasure for Texans for 60 years. Rollover Pass is a channel that was cut in Bolivar Peninsula in the 1950s. It allows salt water from the gulf to flow into the east bay of Galveston Bay. For the past 60 years, it has been an outstanding fishing location for Texans. You can park right there and literally fish out of the back of your car. Its a perfect spot for fishing for those without expensive boats. For those who have disabilities, it is easy to access and is an outstanding resource. Yet, the General Land Office is working hard to close Rollover Pass. They dont own the land on which Rollover Pass was constructed, so theyve negotiated a deal whereby Galveston County will use their eminent domain power, and then the Corps of Engineers will close Rollover Pass forever. Let me go on record: I deeply oppose closing Rollover Pass. It is a real treasure for Texans in the area and has been enjoyed by families for over 60 years. Make no mistake, there is upkeep and maintenance required to combat erosion and sand which flows through Rollover Pass must be periodically dredged and removed. But for any area of public benefit -- such as local and state parks, there is always upkeep and maintenance. But these things benefit the public and Texans as a whole. Finally, anytime we cut deals in order to use the power of eminent domain, Im immediately skeptical. Eminent domain abuse is a favorite tool of government. Closing Rollover Pass is bad for Texas, and bad for Texans. As Texas Land Commissioner, Ill do everything in my power to prevent its closure. WattsforTexas.org
