How this company built a business by interviewing students? However, in every challenge, lies an opportunity. That’s precisely what drove Terry Crawford, a former lawyer from the United States, his wife Gloria Chyou to set up Initial View in 2009. The Beijing-based company specializes in conducting live and unscripted one-on-one video interviews with Chinese students for colleges in the U.S. and U.K. That way, the students do not have to spend thousands of dollars just to attend an interview, and admissions officers are still be able to assess the applicants’ language and interpersonal skills. Despite the teething issues of running a business in a foreign country, Initial View has witnessed steady growth and currently conducts interviews in 11 cities across China and is looking to expand to other Asian markets. Over the years, Terry and Gloria say that they have conducted interviews of thousands of applicants to top U.S. and U.K. universities. As of 2012, 38 of the top 50 American universities recognized Initial View interviews.
