How to Keep Your Home Safe From Burglaries -An article from SafeFamilyLife 1. Write only your last name or initials on your mailbox. This keeps everyone from knowing your first name and is especially important if you are a woman. Stalkers sometimes observe the mailbox station, watching for women who might be alone. 2. For safety reasons, its a good idea to have an unpublished phone number, you may have to pay a fee for that, but its worth it. If you do elect to have your number listed, use only your initials and your last name, omit listing your first name. Addresses are too easy to locate these days, you dont want to announce to the world that you are living alone, especially if you are a woman. 3. Make sure the locks on all doors leading into your home have been changed since the last tenant was living there. Even though the past tenants might have been the nicest people, you dont know what old boyfriends or relatives they might have loaned keys to while they were living there. 4. Avoid distractions when entering your home. Dont talk on your cell phone or appear preoccupied when walking toward your building. Criminals look for a weak target and a chance to catch someone off guard. Someone could be approaching you and you might not see them coming. This is one way that burglars will force their way into a home by surprise attack. 5. Notify management of any lights that are burned out, or areas that are poorly lit. Always keep your Cell Phone Flash-Lite or a regular flash light with you in your car or purse. If you enter your home after dark, the extra light will help you see around any dark areas. 6. Report overgrown shrubbery around your home to the landlord. Large bushes can provide a hiding place for burglars. Avoid walking past areas that obstruct your view, someone could be waiting to attack. 7. Make an inventory of your valuables. Include the description, serial number and value. Keep a copy of your records online, in a fire-proofed lock box or in a safe deposit box in a bank. Take pictures of your most valuable items and attach those to your receipts to make any insurance claims run as smoothly as possible. 8. Attach the [a] Glass Guard alarm to your sliding glass door. Easy to install, if anyone tries to hit, cut or open your door, a siren will sound for up to 20 seconds. 9. Place a broom handle or other long stick in the track of your sliding glass doors. If the lock is picked, the stick will prevent the door from sliding open. 10. Purchase light timers for your inside lights and set them to turn on when youre away in the evening. 11. Take in your newspaper and packages on a daily basis. Crooks look for a collection of newspapers or other deliverables as indications that the resident may be gone away. 12. Call the police anytime you feel threatened. The police would much rather come out and check something out before a crime is committed. 13. Get to know the people in your neighborhood. The more people you are familiar with the better. Attend a neighborhood watch meeting, where like-minded people can gather and make suggestions for a safer community. 14. Notify a trusted neighbor if you are going to be gone for more than a couple of days. If possible, ask a friend, coworker or family member to come by and check things out for you while you are gone. That way there is more than one person to share the responsibility of keeping your place safe. 15. Lock your windows when you go to bed or leave your home. Unlocked windows are the easiest way for criminals to enter a residence. Use the [a] Glass Guard alarm or the [a] UFO alarm on your windows for extra security, if someone breaks the window or tries to force it open, a loud alarm will sound.
