How to get my Irish up #451: Use my name to try to get free stuff from colleagues and friends. It always goes something a little like this. A friend of a friend, normally someone I respect mind you, casually introduces us at a social gathering. Then Leanne Leech yaks my ear off about her business...normally when Im standing there with an empty glass or an armload of dirty dishes because she has no respect for my time. Then she takes my business card. Then she sends a follow-up email gushing about how great it was to finally meet me since we have oh-so-many common friends while alluding to some lunch/chat/meeting/sales pitch that she tried to get me to commit to. (then the inevitable Facebook leech, random comments and likes, friend suggestions, etc and then the email...) Something like, Hey Kat! Your best friend Leanne is asking me to come shoot some product line for free because it would be good for my portfolio and I assume since we are actually friends you know I charge X amount for my design sessions (because, well, you paid me for my services as you recognize my talent and time are valuable and indeed, I support my family) but this Leanne woman, who apparently must have gifted you some bone marrow or broke you out of jail seems pretty adamant that our respective business are on the brink of collapse if I say no... THUD!
