How we came to be (the first week) It was summer 2000, not in the weather sense just the time of year! Dave Williams didn’t have much going on in his life other than his 2 year old daughter, no work and little money. At the age of 25 had so far failed to carve out a career although having had many jobs, warehouse work, office work, pizza delivery, computer engineer, sales, nothing had ever really grabbed his enthusiasm. Someone once said “he wasn’t hungry enough” and it was true. It was that summer he got a phone call from a friend (the same one that said he wasn’t hungry enough) asking if he wanted to earn a little cash painting a few rooms above a dental surgery. 2 weeks later it was done, Dave drove away from the job satisfied, something he had never before had the honour of feeling about “work”, he was proud of the work he had done and a little surprised at how much he had enjoyed it. Dave was faced with a choice, drive home and get back to the mundane or not, something in his head said “not” He didn’t drive home, he drove to the office of the local free paper and enquired as to how to put an advert in the paper offering a painting and decorating service. Now if Dave had thought about this a little more he would have realised that this isn’t how it should be done, to be a painter and decorator you need tools, equipment and a bit of experience would help. His tool collection consisted of 2 dust sheets a pair of wooden step ladders (very heavy and very old) acquired from the dentist as they weren’t needed and breached every health and safety rule in the book! And a budget pack of 10 value paintbrushes bought from Wilkinsons for 99p his method of transport being a 14 year old golf hatchback. His experience consisted of 2 weeks painting some spare rooms above a dentist and bits and bobs around his own home. If someone had of told him to think about it he would have done and it wouldn’t have happened. So £14 later an advert was placed, it simply said “Painter and decorator, call Dave Thinking nothing much will come of it he carried on with the mundane until the paper was delivered 2 days later, he hoped for 1 job, 1 job would do, a bit of extra pocket money was all that was required. The day of delivery, Thursday after noon, the phone rings, “hello, is that Dave “the decorator”, It is, “I have 4 ceilings that need papering” ok I will call later and take a look. Now Dave never having so much as thought about hanging a piece of paper let alone actually papering a ceiling should have again thought about it, he had no paste table, not even a bucket to mix paste in. what he did have was a growing hunger and about £100 left over from the Dentist job but most importantly he had a brother (the friend who had got him the dentist job) and between the 2 of them were always willing to take on anything, the Laurel and Hardy theme tune did tend to accompany them wherever they went but they loved nothing more than a challenge, the £100 was invested in a paste table, a bucket and a paste brush. 2 days later the job was done, the customer was overjoyed at the results and the money was banked. Almost immediately after getting home from the first job as if on cue, the phone rang again and what was to become the norm the voice on the other end said, “hello, can I speak to Dave “the decorator” Dave The Decorator was born. To be continued....................
