Human solidarity is essential to promoting lasting peace and fostering sustainable development. International Day of Friendship recognizes the relevance and importance of friendship as a noble and valuable sentiment in the lives of human beings around the world. Governments, international organizations and civil society groups are encouraged to hold events, activities and initiatives that contribute to promoting a dialogue among civilizations, solidarity, mutual understanding and reconciliation. The UN General Assembly proclaimed this Day in its 2011 resolution A/RES/65/275.
